Kraken Wallet is a self-custody mobile wallet built for users who want direct control of their crypto while still accessing swaps, DApps and DeFi.
Its strengths come from a fairly simple combination: the wallet is open source, does not require a Kraken exchange account, keeps custody with the user and provides enough on-chain functionality for regular use.

Kraken Wallet Review 2026: Quick Verdict
Kraken Wallet is a strong mobile self-custody wallet for users who want straightforward access to major crypto networks, DApps, NFTs, DeFi positions and cross-chain swaps. Its open-source code, Trail of Bits security assessments and Kraken Connect integration strengthen the package, but the lack of native hardware-wallet support limits its appeal for large long-term holdings.
Our take: Kraken Wallet is best viewed as an everyday Web3 wallet rather than a vault. It combines a clean mobile experience with 12 supported networks, WalletConnect, route-based swaps and useful Kraken Exchange integration. Security transparency is a standout, but private keys still operate within a network-connected phone, placing a hard ceiling on protection compared with dedicated hardware wallets.

For this Kraken Wallet review, we evaluated the wallet across six main categories: security, ease of use, network and asset support, DeFi and Web3 functionality, fees, and privacy and transparency.
Research was conducted in August 2026 using Kraken Wallet's current website, support documentation, network and swap documentation, security architecture materials, open-source repositories, Trail of Bits assessments, Kraken Connect documentation and current iOS and Android functionality.
We assessed documented wallet setup, recovery, network support, transfers, swaps, cross-chain routing, WalletConnect, NFT support, DeFi position tracking, Kraken Connect and transaction-fee controls.
We also considered Kraken Wallet's principal risks and limitations, including hot-wallet exposure, seed-phrase theft, malicious DApps, harmful token approvals, phishing, unsupported networks, lack of native hardware-wallet integration and the temporary iCloud restoration issue affecting some new or freshly installed iOS devices as of Aug. 21, 2026.

What Is Kraken Wallet and How Does It Work?
Kraken Wallet is a self-custody interface for accessing blockchain accounts. Kraken develops the application, but it does not hold the crypto managed through the wallet.
Kraken Wallet Is a Self-Custody Wallet
Self-custody means the user controls the credentials that authorize transactions. With Kraken Wallet, those credentials ultimately derive from the user's private keys and Secret Recovery Phrase rather than a Kraken login.
A Kraken Exchange account is not required. Kraken Wallet can be created independently, and Kraken cannot recover the private keys if the user loses both wallet access and the recovery credentials.
The crypto itself also does not sit "inside" Kraken Wallet. The assets remain recorded on whichever blockchain they belong to. The application derives addresses, reads blockchain state and signs the transactions needed to interact with those assets.
Kraken Wallet vs Kraken Exchange
Kraken Wallet and Kraken Exchange share a brand but use very different custody models.

Kraken Connect provides a connection between these products. A linked exchange balance remains custodial until crypto is actually withdrawn on-chain to the self-custody wallet.

Is Kraken Wallet Safe?
Kraken Wallet has credible security controls and unusually good transparency for a mobile wallet, but it still inherits the limitations of hot-wallet architecture.

Kraken Wallet is a mobile software wallet running on a network-connected device.
Kraken explains that the wallet cannot perform transaction signing entirely inside the phone. During signing, private-key material must be exposed within the sandboxed application's memory. That leaves a larger attack surface than dedicated hardware that keeps signing keys isolated.
Kraken does use the operating system's security hardware around key storage. Its wallet security architecture stores private-key material through iOS Keychain or Android Keystore, while other application data sits in an encrypted database. A user-generated password can add another encryption layer.
Biometrics such as Face ID and fingerprint protection are useful local controls. They do not convert an internet-connected phone into cold storage.
For regular Web3 use and smaller active balances, Kraken Wallet has a reasonable security model. For a very large long-term portfolio, hardware-backed key isolation remains the stronger setup.

Open-Source Code and Independent Security Audits
Kraken Wallet is free and open-source software distributed under the MIT license. Its public repository gives researchers and developers a way to inspect substantial portions of the implementation rather than treating the wallet as a black box.
Open source improves transparency, but it does not guarantee that every release is secure.
Trail of Bits has reviewed three significant areas of Kraken Wallet: the original mobile wallet, the iCloud Backup implementation and the in-app browser. Its public security-review repository also contains fix-review material for those engagements. That 2024 review identified 24 issues: eight medium, eight low and eight informational.
Several findings had direct user-security implications. Trail of Bits identified weaknesses around local biometric and password authentication, sensitive-operation reauthentication, certificate validation and how WalletConnect transactions were presented. Another finding concerned fee values originating from remote services without adequate presentation to the user.
For users, these findings concerned the layer between possessing the keys and understanding what those keys were being asked to authorize. A self-custody wallet can protect key ownership while still presenting incomplete or misleading transaction information.
A later November 2024 in-app browser assessment identified 15 findings: two high, five medium, four low and four informational.
The two high-severity findings were particularly relevant to DApp activity. One concerned applications potentially using permissions granted to another DApp, while another involved queued browser requests potentially inheriting permissions from other pages. Both affected the boundary between applications and the permissions users believed they had granted.
Trail of Bits separately spent two weeks reviewing Kraken Wallet's iCloud Backup in September 2024.
The audit history therefore gives Kraken Wallet a stronger transparency case rather than a blank security check. Significant issues have existed, independent researchers documented them publicly and follow-up work was reviewed. None of that removes the residual risks of future software vulnerabilities or mobile-wallet architecture.
Secret Recovery Phrase and Private Key Security
New Kraken Wallets use a 12-word Secret Recovery Phrase. The SRP acts as the wallet's master recovery credential. If the user loses both wallet access and the phrase, Kraken cannot reset the wallet like an exchange password. Anyone who obtains the phrase may be able to recreate the wallet elsewhere.
The SRP follows the familiar mnemonic model used across many crypto wallets. Kraken's security architecture says key generation draws device entropy before using established BIP32 and BIP39 tooling to generate wallet credentials.
Biometrics and an application password serve another purpose. They control local access to the installed application. They do not replace the recovery phrase or determine blockchain ownership.
The useful recovery distinction is simple:
- Losing the phone or deleting the application is recoverable if the SRP remains available.
- Losing the SRP while the installed wallet still works gives the user an opportunity to create another backup.
- Losing both wallet access and the SRP can make the assets inaccessible.
The seed phrase remains the part of traditional wallet recovery that demands the most discipline. It should be kept offline, private and somewhere the user can actually retrieve it if the device fails.
iCloud Backup and Passkey Recovery
Kraken Wallet offers an encrypted iCloud backup of the Secret Recovery Phrase. The backup uses a passkey-based recovery flow, giving eligible iOS users another way to restore their wallet without manually entering the SRP during the normal recovery process.
This does not eliminate the traditional SRP. Kraken recommends maintaining a manual backup as another recovery route.
There is another detail users should understand. Apple supports passkey sharing, and Kraken warns that sharing the passkey associated with the backup can consequently share access to the wallet backup.
The normal restoration flow lets a user choose Import from iCloud and authenticate using the associated passkey.
As of Aug. 21, 2026, Kraken has a temporary iCloud restoration issue. A recent iOS update can prevent some users from restoring an iCloud backup on a new or freshly installed device. Kraken offers an older-device or manual-SRP route while the issue remains unresolved.
The problem affects one recovery route rather than the on-chain assets themselves. It also makes the case for retaining a manual SRP backup fairly concrete.
Kraken Wallet Security Risks to Know About
Most residual risks come from the phone, the recovery credentials and what the user chooses to sign.
- Compromised phone: Malware or a compromised operating system can expose an internet-connected wallet environment.
- Seed-phrase phishing: Anyone who obtains the SRP can potentially recreate the wallet elsewhere.
- Malicious DApps: A harmful application can present transactions designed to steal assets.
- Token approvals: A user can authorize a smart contract to spend tokens later, sometimes with a very large allowance.
- Malicious signatures: The wallet cannot protect users from every harmful instruction they deliberately authorize.
- Fake Kraken Wallet apps: Recovery credentials entered into an imitation wallet can be stolen immediately.
- Wrong-network transfers: Sending an asset over an unsupported or incompatible blockchain can leave it inaccessible or cause loss.
- Hot-wallet exposure: The signing device remains connected to the internet.

The current Swaps matrix enables same-chain and cross-chain Swaps on Ethereum, Ink, Optimism, Arbitrum, Base, Polygon, Blast and Linea. Bitcoin, Solana and Avalanche are explicitly marked unsupported for Swaps. Dogecoin is absent from the matrix, so this review does not infer swap support simply because DOGE can be held in the wallet.
Kraken does not publish an equivalent per-network WalletConnect matrix. DApp compatibility therefore depends on both the wallet and the application supporting the relevant blockchain.
Network supported by wallet ≠every wallet feature supported on that network.
The distinction prevents a common mistake. Being able to hold SOL in Kraken Wallet does not mean the built-in Swaps feature can currently route a Solana trade.
Which Tokens and NFTs Can Kraken Wallet Store?
Kraken Wallet supports the native asset of each compatible network, all ERC-20 tokens on supported EVM networks and SPL tokens on Solana. Its practical asset coverage is therefore much larger than a list of 12 native coins suggests.
NFT support currently covers Ethereum, Arbitrum, Base, Optimism, Polygon and Solana.
Bitcoin support is narrower. Kraken Wallet currently does not support:
- Bitcoin Ordinals
- BRC-20 tokens
- Runes
Token visibility is also filtered through a reputation system. Kraken can categorize assets as listed, not listed or likely spam, with likely-spam assets hidden by default.
Kraken Wallet Fees and Costs
Kraken Wallet itself does not require a subscription, but using a self-custody wallet does not remove the costs imposed by blockchains, DEXs, bridges or a sending exchange.
Sending and Receiving Crypto
A standard on-chain transfer requires a network fee. Kraken Wallet does not receive the blockchain fee charged when a transaction is submitted. The amount depends on the network, current congestion and the transaction being executed.
Users can also change transaction priority on some chains. Kraken Wallet currently offers:
- Bitcoin: Fast, Medium and Slow.
- Ethereum and supported EVM networks: Urgent, Fast and Normal.
- Solana and Dogecoin: A fee calculated automatically by the wallet.
These transaction-priority controls change the trade-off between fee and likely confirmation speed rather than creating a fixed Kraken charge.

Kraken Wallet Swap and Bridge Costs
As of Aug. 21, 2026, Kraken Wallet does not add fee for access to its Swaps feature. A swap can still cost money because execution runs through blockchains, decentralized liquidity and, for cross-chain transactions, bridges.
The cost stack is easier to understand when separated:
- Kraken-based wallet fee: Kraken currently does not add one for access to Swaps.
- Network fee: Blockchain gas required to submit the transaction.
- DEX execution: The exchange rate available from decentralized liquidity sources.
- Bridge fee: May apply when the swap crosses from one blockchain to another.
- Slippage: The difference between the quoted rate and the rate that can ultimately execute.
- Route: The DEX and bridge path selected to complete the transaction.
- Token output: The amount expected to reach the user after execution.
The wallet provides a fee preview before the user signs. Blockchain gas appears as the Network fee, while an applicable cross-chain charge appears as the Bridge fee. Users can also review the expected and minimum token output before confirming the swap.
Consider an illustrative 1,000 USDC swap from Ethereum to Base. One route might display a lower network fee but deliver fewer tokens because of execution quality. Another might involve a slightly higher bridge or gas cost while producing a better final output.
Looking only at gas would therefore miss part of the trade. The better comparison is the final amount received after route economics, fees and slippage.
Kraken Wallet's default slippage tolerance is 0.5%, with 1%, 3% and custom settings available. Slippage tolerance controls how far execution can move away from the quote before the trade fails.
Cross-chain transactions introduce another layer because they depend on blockchain bridges to move value or messages between separate networks. That makes a cross-chain quote structurally different from a simple token swap on one blockchain.

Does Kraken Connect Make Transfers Free?
Kraken Connect simplifies an exchange-to-wallet transfer. It does not automatically eliminate the costs attached to that withdrawal.
A Connect user can select an exchange-held token, choose the receiving network and specify an amount from inside the linked wallet experience. The underlying transaction still moves the asset from Kraken Exchange custody to a self-custody blockchain address.
Any applicable exchange withdrawal cost should therefore be checked on the confirmation screen. Kraken's withdrawal fees vary by asset and network, and the final quoted fee takes precedence over a static assumption.
The network also needs to match the receiving asset. A shorter transfer flow cannot make an incompatible blockchain route safe.
Kraken Wallet Features
Kraken Wallet's best features are its route-based Swaps, WalletConnect access and portfolio visibility.
Kraken Wallet Features Focus on Practical Web3 ActivitySwaps and Cross-Chain Swaps
Kraken Wallet Swaps use DEX and bridge aggregation rather than relying on a single decentralized exchange. For each swap, the wallet searches compatible liquidity sources and builds a route through available decentralized exchanges and, where required, bridge infrastructure.
That route can then be optimized using two choices.
- Best Value looks for the route with the highest minimum token output. The emphasis is therefore on how much reaches the user rather than simply choosing the route with the lowest visible gas fee.
- Fastest Transaction Speed instead looks for an optimal route and network-fee combination intended to complete the transaction more quickly. The economically best route can therefore differ from the fastest route.
Kraken also lets the user configure slippage. The default is 0.5%, with 1%, 3% and custom values available. If market movement or available liquidity would push execution beyond the permitted threshold, the minimum-output protection becomes relevant.
The next stage provides the fee preview before signing. Depending on the route, users can see:
- Network fee: The blockchain cost required to execute the transaction.
- Bridge fee: A charge associated with a cross-chain bridge where applicable.
- Token output: The amount expected from the selected route.
- Minimum output: The lowest amount expected after accounting for the permitted slippage.
A same-chain swap exchanges assets while staying on one blockchain. An ETH-to-USDC transaction on Ethereum, for example, can use decentralized liquidity without moving the resulting asset onto another network.
A cross-chain swap finishes on another blockchain. Moving USDC from Ethereum to Base requires a route capable of crossing the network boundary, which introduces bridge infrastructure alongside DEX execution.
Kraken currently lists eight networks for same-chain and cross-chain Swaps:

WalletConnect and DApp Access
WalletConnect lets Kraken Wallet communicate with compatible Web3 applications without exposing the Secret Recovery Phrase or private keys to the application.
On mobile, a user can open a DApp in a browser, choose WalletConnect and pass the connection request to Kraken Wallet. On desktop, the application will commonly display a QR code that can be scanned from the phone. Kraken Wallet then shows information about the requested connection before the user approves it.
NFTs, DeFi Positions and Token Management
Kraken Wallet brings several smaller portfolio-management functions into the same mobile interface.
NFTs can be displayed on Ethereum, Solana, Polygon, Arbitrum, Optimism and Base as of Aug. 21, 2026. The wallet groups them by item or collection and provides Favorite, Copy ID and Archive controls. Archiving an NFT simply removes it from the normal wallet view rather than changing its on-chain ownership.
Kraken's NFT documentation says formats such as .mp3 audio and .mov video are not currently rendered inside the application. The underlying NFT can still be sent or received.
Kraken Wallet also tracks selected DeFi positions through a Deposits section. Kraken uses that label for activities including lending, borrowing, rewards, liquidity-provider positions and vaults. Existing positions associated with an imported wallet can appear automatically, while users can return to the underlying DApp through WalletConnect when they need to manage the position.
There is a network limitation. DeFi-position currently covers Ethereum and supported EVM networks, while Solana DeFi positions do not appear in the same dashboard.
Multiple-wallet management works through the active Secret Recovery Phrase. Kraken Wallet supports one active SRP at a time but multiple accounts under that phrase. Each derived account receives its own addresses across compatible networks.
How to Set Up Kraken Wallet
Setting up Kraken Wallet takes only a few steps. The part worth slowing down for is recovery, because creating the wallet is reversible while losing its only usable recovery credential may not be.

- Download the official Kraken Wallet application through the Apple App Store or Google Play.
- Open the application and select Create Wallet.
- Back up the newly generated 12-word Secret Recovery Phrase.
- Verify the phrase by selecting the words in the required order.
- Enable biometric protection such as Face ID or fingerprint authentication if desired.
- Fund the wallet using the address for the intended blockchain network.
The creation flow requires the user to record and verify the 12-word recovery phrase before treating the wallet as safely backed up.
Only use an application reached through Kraken's official channels. A fake wallet has no need to break wallet cryptography if it can persuade the user to enter the recovery phrase voluntarily.

Importing MetaMask, Phantom or Another Wallet
Kraken Wallet supports imports using an existing 12- to 24-word Secret Recovery Phrase. It does not currently support importing an individual private key or a separate passphrase used to create a hidden wallet.
That means compatible wallets such as MetaMask and Phantom can be accessed through Kraken Wallet by importing their existing SRP where the recovery and derivation structure is compatible.
The original application does not stop working after import. Kraken explicitly explains that an imported wallet remains accessible through other compatible wallet providers using the same SRP.
Kraken Wallet also supports only one active SRP at a time. Users can derive multiple accounts under that phrase, but cannot keep several independent recovery phrases simultaneously active inside the application.
Importing a Wallet vs Transferring Crypto
Importing a wallet and transferring crypto accomplish different things.
- Importing: Another wallet application gains access to the same blockchain accounts by using the existing Secret Recovery Phrase.
- Transferring: Assets move through an on-chain transaction from one blockchain address to another.
No blockchain transaction occurs when a MetaMask SRP is imported into Kraken Wallet. That is why the assets remain visible in MetaMask afterward. Both applications are interfaces to the same underlying blockchain accounts.
Neither MetaMask nor Kraken Wallet physically holds those tokens. Both derive the keys required to view balances and authorize transactions associated with the accounts.
A transfer instead creates a new blockchain transaction, can incur a network fee and moves the assets to an address controlled by another set of keys.
Kraken Connect: Linking Kraken Wallet to Kraken Exchange
Kraken Connect is an optional OAuth2-based connection that makes Kraken Wallet considerably more useful for existing Kraken users.
The Kraken Connect integration links an exchange account directly to Kraken Wallet. Once connected, the wallet can display Kraken Exchange balances and provide a shorter workflow for moving assets from the exchange into self-custody.
The connection works through OAuth rather than requiring users to hand their exchange credentials directly to the wallet. The broad flow is:
- Open Kraken Wallet and navigate to Connections.
- Select Kraken Exchange and the wallet address to connect.
- Log in to the exchange through the OAuth2 authorization flow.
- Return to Kraken Wallet to view the linked balance.
- When withdrawing, choose the token, destination network and amount before transferring.
OAuth account linking itself does not change custody. Exchange balances remain controlled within Kraken's custodial environment until an actual withdrawal takes place. After the asset arrives at a Kraken Wallet address, control depends on the user's wallet keys and recovery credentials.
Kraken Connect therefore works best for someone who regularly buys assets on the exchange and withdraws them for self-custody, swaps, DApps or other on-chain use. It removes some of the address-copying friction between the two products without pretending they share a custody model.
Kraken Wallet vs Other Crypto Wallets
Kraken Wallet competes most effectively on mobile simplicity and Kraken integration. Other wallets lead when the priority shifts toward network breadth, desktop use, deeper customization or hardware-wallet connectivity.

- MetaMask is the stronger fit for users who want a highly configurable EVM wallet and broader advanced Web3 compatibility. Its current product has also expanded beyond its original Ethereum-only identity.
- Trust Wallet takes the opposite approach to Kraken's curated network list. Its current wallet documentation advertises support for 100+ blockchains, making breadth one of the clearer reasons to choose it instead.
- Phantom remains the more natural choice when Solana sits at the center of the user's activity. Its broader multichain support makes the comparison closer than it once was, but its Solana-native interface, NFT tooling and ecosystem integrations remain core strengths.
- The Base App makes more sense for users whose on-chain activity is concentrated around Coinbase and Base rather than Kraken's exchange-to-wallet ecosystem.
The choice therefore comes down to workflow more than whichever wallet has the longest feature list.

Kraken Wallet vs a Hardware Wallet
Kraken Wallet is optimized for convenient signing and active on-chain use. A hardware wallet is optimized for keeping the private key away from the internet-connected device preparing the transaction.
Devices such as Ledger and Trezor move transaction authorization onto dedicated signing hardware. That provides stronger key isolation than asking a network-connected phone to handle the full signing workflow.
The two models can complement each other.
A user might keep an active balance in Kraken Wallet for transfers, swaps and trusted DApps while storing the bulk of a longer-term portfolio behind a hardware signer. That limits the amount exposed to the risks associated with a daily-use hot wallet.
Kraken Wallet's present limitation is that hardware-wallet connections are not supported as of Aug. 21, 2026. Users therefore cannot combine Kraken Wallet's interface with a Ledger or Trezor signer in the same way they can through several competing software wallets.

- No native hardware-wallet integration: Ledger, Trezor and other hardware signers cannot currently be connected directly to Kraken Wallet.
- Mobile-first platform: Kraken Wallet centers on iOS and Android rather than providing the desktop or browser-extension workflow some power users prefer.
- Curated blockchain coverage: Twelve supported networks cover major ecosystems but fall short of wallets designed around much wider chain support.
- Swap support is narrower than wallet support: Eight networks currently appear in the built-in Swaps matrix.
- Bitcoin token standards are limited: Ordinals, BRC-20 tokens and Runes remain unsupported.
- Recovery creates permanent-loss risk: Kraken cannot reset blockchain access if the user loses both the installed wallet and recovery credentials.
- iCloud recovery currently has an iOS issue: As of August 19, 2026, some new or freshly installed devices can fail to restore through iCloud backup.
- DApp risk remains with the user: A self-custody wallet cannot guarantee that a smart contract or transaction the user approves is safe.

Kraken Wallet is a good mobile self-custody wallet, particularly for existing Kraken users and people who regularly move between centralized trading and Web3.
Its security case is stronger than a simple brand association. The feature set is also more useful than basic storage. Kraken Wallet can aggregate DEX and bridge routes, optimize Swaps for value or speed, expose network and bridge fees before confirmation, apply user-selected slippage, connect to DApps through WalletConnect and display selected DeFi positions. Its 12 supported networks give mainstream users reasonable coverage, although swap functionality, NFTs and portfolio tracking each cover smaller subsets.
For active self-custody, Kraken Wallet is a strong candidate. For Kraken-to-Web3 transfers, Kraken Connect strengthens the case further. Its best role is as an everyday on-chain wallet rather than the place where an entire portfolio sits untouched for years.
