It's long been believed that the US government has been involved in shaping information on social media. Well, recently journalists from The Intercept ran an absolutely insane story about just how much influence intelligence agencies are exerting online.
As a fun fact, US intelligence agencies have been shaping media narratives since the start of the Cold War (the late 1940s). Operation Mockingbird is probably the best example of this, and it involves pushing pro-US propaganda wherever possible.
Funny enough, the information war we're seeing online today has its roots in the war against terrorism. The DHS which was originally tasked with fighting terrorism has been expanding its scope to fighting, well, anyone the US government doesn't like.
